VPC Global Mission Trip to Malawi, South Africa

May 30 - June 14, 2008

Deep in southeast Africa lies the small landlocked country named Malawi.  It is known as the “Warm Heart of Africa” for the kind spirit of the people, despite the poverty and disease which affect so many lives.  There are currently over one million orphans in Malawi, largely as a result of the AIDS pandemic.  Orphaned children are typically taken in by a relative, often an elderly grandmother, or left to fend for themselves.

The Mission of MINISTRY OF HOPE (MOH) is to glorify God by reaching out to the orphans, widows and destitute in various communities with the gospel of Jesus Christ as we minister to their basic needs.  MINISTRY OF HOPE is dedicated to providing hope, help, and a future through several life giving programs such as the six feeding centers, two crisis nurseries and the scholarship program.

We believe that God has called Valley Presbyterian Church to walk with the people of Malawi through the work of MINISTRY OF HOPE.   One way we are responding to God’s calling, is by sending missions teams to work with our Malawian brothers and sisters in Christ.   This work consists of volunteering in the (MOH) community based orphan centers and crisis nurseries. Activities will include teaching Bible lessons and memory verses, arts and crafts, child care, construction, and vocational training/tutoring.  Major agricultural and irrigation projects are also underway for the orphan centers.

We encourage both youth and adults to consider joining our team with Pastor Ruth Reinhold and MOH Board Member, Carmel Courtright.  Pastor Woody Garvin will also be joining the team in Malawi.  If you feel God’s tugging at your heart to venture into an amazing, life-changing journey with fellow Christians, please prayerfully consider joining our June mission team to Malawi.

For more information you may visit the Malawi Mission Table on Sunday mornings or contact Carmel Courtright or Pastor Marilyn Manning.

As Crisis Nursery infants become toddlers, the need for an orphanage becomes critical. We are fully committed to accomplish the construction of the Mzuzu orphanage within five years.

A VPC mission team went to Malawi April 16 – May 4, 2007, to work with the Ministry of Hope in the community-based orphan care program under Nkhoma Synod, a synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) in Malawi.  We had the opportunity to share God's love by reaching out to orphaned children and widows.

A two-week mission trip is planned for June 2008. We are looking forward to implementing two trips each year to Malawi – one Fall and one Spring.
